How Sati system was abolished in India??

Sati was an old custom practiced in India by the Hindu women . Earlier it was voluntary but with time it became forced. Well, practice like Sati is not tolerable even if it is voluntary same as  suicide is not tolerable, it is an offence whatever the reason may be for its commission.

Under this system the widow has to sit or jump into the funeral of her deceased husband to ensure good life after her death and get the opportunity to be called as a 'chaste women' or a 'good women'.

The traces of this practice can be seen in Ramayana and Mahabharata but there it was voluntary. After Vedic period came to an end , it was converted to a forced practice prevalent in some of the parts of India.

The origin of this practice  most probably is in the story of Lord Shiva and Devi Sati whereby Sati jumped into 'hawan kund' in the grief of her husbands insult and was Incarnated into Devi Parvati.

So it was believed that the women who will practice will be incarnated into a good life.

All this shows how narrow and cunning a human mind can be, it will never learn anything good from these ancient stories ,it will ignore what Shiva did for Sati , it will ignore how infinitely Shiva loved Sati but it will focus on something irrelevant which is obviously linked to world of afterdeath.

Nevermind, Sati was mostly practised in West Bengal the reason was dayabagha system .

According to this system the widow was having right to inherit the property so she was forced to practice sati so that other relatives could enjoy the property.

Attempts were made to abolish tgis system during Mughal period and British period but the name which stands alone for abolition of this evil practice is of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in 1772 in Hooghly district of Bengal.

During his childhood he saw his sister in law who was dragged towards her husbands funeral soon after she was into ashes along with her husband . All this was painful and strange for little raja.

Raja was a rebellion from the very beginning. He was against orthodox hindu ideology and was the one who raised voice against Sati system.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a language lover. He learned every language that came to his radar. He was the give rise to a new genre of 'Indian writing in English'.

It is said that he wrote a complaint letter to authorities in England which showed his excellent command over English without having palced his foot over the soil of England. The letter was a roar of an Indian with unbeatable perfection in foreign language.

He was not only against ortgodox hindus but also against Christian missionaries. He published newspaper , magazines to counter all these people.

Raja continuosly made protests, campaigns against sati system . Through speeches, newspaper he was sending his messages against evil of sati.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy with the help of Governor General William Bentick put an end to this practice by declaring it as an offence.

William Bentick in 1829 passed Bangal Sati Regulation which declared this practice as an offence . This regulation was first enforced in Bengal afterwards in Bombay and Madras presidency.

Raja Ram in 1830 went to U.K. to ensure that the regulation should be fully and strictly enforced in India.
